The Three Pillars of Lent
Join Monaca UMC on Ash Wednesday, February 14, 2024, at 7pm, for worship and the imposition of ashes.
Ash Wednesday begins the season of Lent, an annual 40-day journey of self-reflection and repentance. Here are some ideas for how you can observe Lent through its three pillars:
1. PRAYER
Spend time each day in prayer. You can say traditional liturgical prayers, spontaneous prayers that come from the heart, or try lectio divina, a practice of slow, meditative reading and reflection on a passage of scripture.
2. FASTING
Trying abstaining from a particular food or activities/habits that distract you from your time with God. Choose a fast that is meaningful and challenging for you, but also realistic and sustainable.
3. ALMSGIVING
Almsgiving is the practice of giving to those in need, whether though donations or acts of service. Be open to the ways in which God may be calling you to help others and to be a presence of love and compassion in the world.

We also welcome you to join us for Community Lenten Luncheons, where we will enjoy good food and inspiring devotions each Wednesday from February 21, 2024 through March 20, 2024. Monaca UMC has the honor of serving as the location host for all five luncheons this year. See this post for more details.
Regardless of how you observe Lent, please remember that these practices are not about reaching for earthly perfection, but about deepening your relationship with God and growing your love and compassion for others.
