Honoring a Legacy of Music
On Thursday, May 25, 2023—nearly one year after removing our organ piece-by-piece and pipe-by-pipe to be completely refurbished—Monaca UMC’s “new” organ was dedicated in memory of Edna Mae Hemer, who served as organist at the church for almost 50 years.
Pastor Jim read Psalm 150 and presented the organ for dedication, speaking about the power of music in our spiritual lives. One of Mrs. Hemer’s favorite hymns, “Morning is Broken,” was played as the dedication music by Mrs. Hemer’s daughter, Judy Yester.
Following the formal dedication, a recital was held with Betsylynn Majzlik serving as Mistress of Ceremonies. Giving heartfelt performances in memory of Mrs. Hemer were:
- Gracie Birchill, organist
- Norma Coast, organist
- Betsy Cole (singing with brother, Jim Hemer, and accompanied by sister Judy Yester on the piano)
- Jackie Dmitsak, organist
- Bruce Hayward, organist
- Jim Hemer (singing with sister, Betsy Cole, and accompanied by sister Judy Yester on the piano)
- Dave Hodge, vocalist (accompanied by Judy Yester on the piano)
- David Richards, organist
- Judy Yester, organist and accompanist
The event concluded with a celebratory reception in the Carey Community Center, where guests enjoyed fellowship, a light dinner, and of course, cake!
